I read about teaching who had a poem of the week that they used in their classroom. I'm thinking about doing this at my calendar time. I have found these nursery rhyme posters that I might start with. There is so much you can do with each poem or story including:
find the popcorn words
find the letter of the week
find capital/lowercase letters
count the words
exc
You could also have extensions where the students go write or draw about what they have read. I'm thinking maybe a weekly journal entry?? Any other ideas?

I did a lot of what you listed. This year I hope to make my previous poems into a station. I have them on sentence strips and they will practice reading it (which should be easy since it was done before) then highlight works or letters they know with tape. I also plan to leave a paper copy of the poem in the center for them to highlight and illustrate. Hopefully it can be an independent center after we have done it several times as a class.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea. I'm working on sentence strip- I believe I'm going to add some picture cues on the strips as well! Thanks!
